The Phil Hardin Foundation over the past year has seen the largest volume of grant inquiries since its inception in 1964. Nonprofits and educational institutions are experiencing one of the most unusual and disruptive periods in recent history, and the search for financial sustainability of programming, and even organizational existence for some, is an ongoing struggle.
This demand has forced the Hardin Foundation to make decisions about its annual grantmaking budgets earlier than ever and has affected the flexibility of timing for the submission and consideration of grant proposals. It has also increased the number of grant-seekers we have either turned away or asked to come back later. Since we give priority to our current and long-term partners, this has particularly affected those seeking Hardin grants for the first time.
We have also committed recently to several major multi-year projects in our hometown of Meridian and our capital city of Jackson, the communities highest on our grantmaking priority list. Those high-priority initiatives have further squeezed our discretionary grantmaking capacity.
The Hardin Foundation's grants are allocated on a calendar-year basis. Because of the extent of our existing and anticipated commitments, we are no longer considering proposals for 2026 funding. Our grants budget for the year is fully allocated and decisions on our 2027 allocations will be completed by the end of March from applications already received or that we anticipate receiving. Any discussions from this point forward with prospective new grantees would be about funding in 2028 at the earliest. We will begin evaluating those proposals in April 2027, although they may be submitted earlier at the Executive Director's invitation.
We at the Hardin Foundation have long valued the nimbleness and flexibility of our grantmaking process and our ability to meet the majority of the worthy requests we receive or initiate that are well-prepared and align with our grantmaking priorities. Unfortunately, the current times and the sheer volume of requests for our resources make that nimbleness and flexibility more difficult to achieve.
The organizations and institutions we have served are front and center for us. We will do our best to help our existing partners continue to do their work and fulfill their missions. That may mean that not as much attention or tangible help can be given for a while to those seeking their first partnership with us.
Our mission is to improve educational outcomes for Mississippi children and youth and to expand access to high-quality educational opportunities. We have only one means of accomplishing that mission -- through our grantee partners who actually do the work. We intend to be by their side as they face these challenging times.
